Users of the relatively new YouView service will be treated to an over the air update in the coming days, bringing a host of new goodies, fixes and improvements to a range of set top boxes.
If you’re not already familiar with YouView then allow us to explain; it’s a format similar to Freeview but with internet connectivity that brings in on-demand content, movies and loads more. You can get YouView by purchasing a set top box such as the Humax DTR-T1000, and then all you need is a TV, an aerial and an internet connection.
In fact, the Humax box will be the first to get the update (right now), with other boxes updating over the coming weeks. First and foremost, the update adds Live TV content into the already present search function, which allows the user to scan for programs currently showing or due to show within the next week. The results page for your scan will give you the option to watch a program if it’s already showing, or set a reminder or recording if it’s in the future.
Additionally, Dolby surround sound support will be added, which is sure to please the home cinema buffs out there. This feature will work via HDMI, allowing you to export Dolby quality surround sound to an AV amplifier and some speakers – perfect for watching some movies on demand.
Since the launch of YouView we’ve noticed that a handful of televisions haven’t been able to automatically detect HDMI settings in order to show the correct picture. This update will add an option to change between 720p, 1080i and 1080p.
Finally, for software updates going forward your YouView box will now automatically update you if there’s new software ready to download. This will work in much the same way as Android and iOS smartphones, giving a notification of the update’s availability on screen.
To get the update, head into Settings > System Information > Software Version and check for updates. The new version is 1.2.6, so you know when you have the latest update.
