Twitter Adds Related Headlines Feature for News-worthy Tweets

  • by

Twitter will be launching a new ‘Related Headlines’ feature that will provide handy links to legitimate news sources which feature noteworthy tweets from across the popular social network.

There’s only so much a tweet-hard can share in 140 characters or less and sometimes followers can be left scratching their heads as to what their favourite celebrity is actually rambling on about. Now Twitter will offer up a selection of Related Headlines from respected and reputable entertainment, sports and social media news accounts such as ESPN and Mashable.

For example, if Lady Gaga tweets referring to the recent feud between her and Perez Hilton, links will be close to hand in a dedicated section under the tweet so that followers can get the whole story surrounding the outburst from Twitter approved news outlets. This puts what might appear to be a seemingly random or bizarre tweet into context with a story of public interest.

Or course, there are more engaging Twitter tales that can benefit from this new exposure and in the company’s official blog, Software Engineer Brian Wallerston gives mention to the NBA star Jason Collins who in April came out as gay. His story became the talk of Twitter as well as headline news with a number of websites embedding his tweet into their articles.

As Twitter becomes the go-to place for star-studded entertainment updates and interesting news from around the world in general, often directly from the source, it makes sense that the social network wishes to give the headlines a featured spot.

Do you get your news fix from Twitter, or from the news sites themselves?
