Cinema-quality audio coming to smartphones says THX Boss

  • by

Cinema-quality audio may be coming to smartphones according to the Senior VP of LucasFilm subsidiary THX – the company which brought the epic sounds of the Star Wars Saga to life on the big screen and recognised by that familiar ‘THX Sound’ ident at the start of many Hollywood blockbusters.

Rick Dean addresses the importance of ‘content delivery’ on our portable platforms such as Apple’s iPad 2, iPod Touch and modern high-tech mobiles.

In a conversation with a tech-site Dean speaks of the sensory experience of film and how cinema quality sound could translate onto our handheld gadgets “Five years ago, I said that we should really get into the mobile audio world, but they said, ‘You can’t get a theatrical experience out of that, you’re listening to it with earbuds.’”

“Five years ago, I said that we should really get into the mobile audio world, but they said, ‘You can’t get a theatrical experience out of that, you’re listening to it with earbuds.’

“But look at the way that music is consumed today” he says, suggesting that software applications could be used to improve the mobile platform’s suitability, “it’s got to the point where I know I can work with a company who makes phones like these here [iPhone 4s]. Maybe produce an app that will improve the user experience.”

But just as the THX VP builts us up, with the promise of the glorious audio that could be he knocks us down a peg saying “Although, there’s only so much you can do with a screen this size.”

With the current wave of movie rental and TV-on-demand services, such as Netflix and newcomer HTC Watch, and advances in the picture quality shouldn’t the sound be next for some serious upgrading? We hope THX isn’t put off by a size issue – this idea sounds good to us.
