The Pogoplug personal Cloud Computing Device

Cloud computing – a system where your files and folders are stored online on a large server along with data from thousands of other users… the pros; you can access your work from anywhere where you can get wi-fi. The cons… you have literally no control over the devices your work is stored on.

The Pogoplug, a personal cloud computing device, obviously sorts out this problem, and generally streamline the cloud system for a lot less. The little box connects to your router by a cable, which seems bizarre in this world of wireless internet connection, but hey, it works, right?

Once it’s connected to your router, all you need to do is slot in up to four USB flash drives into one of the USB slots on the device. There hasn’t yet been any confirmation of hard disc drive support, as it is possible to connect one to a USB port with an adapter. If this was possible it would expand the device’s storage capacity enormously. After connecting your storage device(s) you are then all set to open up your browser and enter the Pogoplug website to register and activate your product and the accompanying software… easy enough.

On download to your computer, the Pogoplug software lets you access the files on the USB drives connected to the device wirelessly, anywhere, from either your web browser or from an iPhone app. Once you log in, the software presents the files as they would be displayed on your computer, and lets you download, access or stream them to other users. There is also an option to create an RSS feed of files that you wish to be shared.

So it seems the Pogoplug, which is on approach to the UK soon, does what it says on the tin and more, is reasonably priced at USD $99 and lets you have complete control over the devices your files are stored on. Overall this device is perfect for the job in hand, whether you work in an office, or just want to stream files to other laptops or PCs in your home.
