Sony’s Clamshell Tablet P to Get Ice Cream Sandwich Update on May 24th

[tab name='News']

Late last month we reported that both of Sony’s Android tablets – the Tablet S and Tablet P – were receiving the coveted Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

However, it soon became clear that it was only the 10.1-inch Tablet S that was getting the update in stages, while the quirky clamshell Tablet P’s slice of Ice Cream Sandwich was nowhere to be seen.

Sony has remained quiet on the update schedule until now, speaking out about the Tablet P.  The company let out a press release in its home country of Japan explaining what was going on, putting the date at May 24th for Tablet P owners to get updated to Android 4.0.

The press release doesn’t confirm whether this is the date for a worldwide rollout of the update, although this was the case last month with the Tablet S.

Asides from the usual changes to the look and feel of the Android OS, the update to version 4.0 will also add in some new features for Tablet P owners. The usual improvements are there; the camera application will become accessible from the lockscreen, and once open will now offer a panoramic photo mode. Folders for apps will be creatable on the home screen as well.

Sony’s Tablet P has received a mixed reception since its launch, mainly due to its out-of-the-ordinary form factor. While we’ve become familiar with the ‘slate’ style tablet with a rectangular or square shape, the Tablet P is a clamshell design with two separate touchscreens that almost join together when the tablet is open.

It was launched alongside the Tablet S last year running Android Honeycomb (3.0), and features some nifty additions from Sony, including Playstation certification, which enables the user to download and play original Playstation games such as Crash Bandicoot.
