With Sony announcing a brand new Sony Playstation 3 super slim console last week it would seem that any thoughts of the company putting looking towards a follow-up console (PS4) would be unfounded.
Sony has also confirmed that it will be continuing support for the console until at least 2015 in an interview, with PlayStation Vice President of hardware marketing, John Knoller, confirming the ongoing support in a recent interview with gaming website GameSpot:
“And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible line-up. That consumer coming in this fall is going to really have an opportunity to have great content and what we believe to be the best content in the industry.
“We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot.”
Knoller also laid down some lifespan comparisons with the previous PlayStation 2 console, which was supported heavily for years after the initial release of the PS3 to help game developers and customers to continue to have a great console with the games they need.
“A lot of great games [are] coming,” Koller noted. “Same thing with PS2…it’s kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there’s still games launching for it.”
With the PS3 still changing and adapting, the latest version is the slimmest yet and has the ability to turn your device into an all-in-one storage device with the 500GB version, or customers can pick up the new smaller 12Gb version at a cheaper price.
The new 3 year plan could mean anything as Sony has plenty of time to create and release a new PlayStation console within that time, or they could just see how their ever-changing PS3 goes along over the next few years and increase the cloud gaming, media and social functionality of the console before looking to release something new.
