Sony Ericsson announced 2 new handsets this week that fall under the remit of its GreenHeart strategy that launched late last year; aiming to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 20% before 2015.
The handsets are known as the C901 GreenHeart and the Naite, and will feature ecologically sound ideas such as low-power chargers, waterborne paints, reduced packaging and recycled materials.
The C901 GreenHeart is based on the standard C901, which is yet to grace the UK with its presence still – but with the added advantage of being made out of 50% recycled materials and coming with an in-phone instruction manual, rather than a paper one. Heck, even the included headset is made from 100% recycled materials.
Feature-wise the C901 GreenHeart will come packed with a 5-megapixel snapper and includes features such as, Xenon flash, auto-focus and smile detection. Naturally, being based on the standard C901 it will also come with the other necessities such as 3G HSDPA connectivity, GPS and all the Cybershot photo software that you could ever want.
Don’t be fooled by the similarities in appearance of the two candybar handsets; the C901 is definitely the more fully featured of the two, but that’s not to say that the Naite doesn’t have its own place as a low-cost eco-alternative.
Arriving with a more reserved specs list, the Naite includes a 2-megapixel camera, media player functions and not a whole lot else; although it does come with a low-power charger which should help keep the bills and CO2 emissions down.
The retail version of the C901 GreenHeart is due before the end of Q2 2009, which should be… any minute now then, and the Naite should follow shortly after, during Q3 of this year.
Prices for the handsets haven’t been revealed yet, but if we’re honest the Naite is going to need a seriously attractive price-tag, to swing anyone but the most ardent eco-warrior; the C901 on the other hand, is a well-featured handset which offers the best of both worlds.
