The mobile phone industry moves fast, so fast that most of the time the mobile phone that you purchased all sealed and new, probably has an out of date software version installed. Now with that in mind, Nokia have installed a Software Updater in all of its recent Symbian devices.
So we at the Gadget Helpline are here to help with a full guide on how to update your Nokia phone using the Nokia SW updater and how to set it to automatically check for updates in the future.
We will be demonstrating the SW update using the Nokia N97 (some Nokia handsets will have a slightly different menu layout).
Firstly, make sure your phone is turned on and has a good signal (as the phone will need to connect online to download).
- From the main display press the Menu button.
- Tap Applications.
- Tap Software (SW) Update.
Note: Upon first time of use a “Disclaimer” will be displayed. Tap Accept to continue and accept the Software upgrade’s Terms and Conditions. - “Refreshing List of available updates” will be displayed; this may take a few moments to find new updates.
- Once the check has been completed “Allow automatic checking for updates?” Will be displayed, tap Yes.
- A list of the available download options will be displayed. You can either tap on the desired update (tick the box next to it) or you can highlight the update and hit the Info icon to see a description of the download. See fig. below.
- Tap the Download icon.
- Once the software has been downloaded “Results: (1) Update Successful” will be displayed. Tap Ok.

And that’s it! You are now the proud owner of a fully updated Nokia handset and by setting the “Allow automatic checking for updates” to Yes, you have ensured that your phone will alert you whenever a new update is available. Then just follow the above steps again and Bob’s your Uncle.
Please ensure you check your data plan for your contract with your network as some downloads can be very large.
