If you bought a Nokia phone or a spare charger in the last six months you might need to get a replacement charger from Nokia. Apparently the covers of certain third party chargers can come off and there is the danger of electrical shock. While Nokia isn’t aware of any actual incidents, as a precautionary measure, they will exchange affected chargers free-of-charge.
The affected chargers were manufactured by a Chinese supplier called Huizhou BYD Electronics Co., Ltd. It has been discovered that the plastic covers of these chargers can possibly come loose and even fall off. This of course will expose the charger’s internal components and if you are silly enough to touch the insides of the live charger with its cover off, while it is plugged in, then you will get an electric shock!
The AC-4U model manufactured by BYD but between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009 is affected as are charger models AC-3U and AC-3E also manufactured by BYD between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009. Chargers manufactured outside of these dates are not affected.
Nokia have a special website where you can enter your charger’s model number and identification number and see if it needs to be exchanged.
From a bit of investigation it looks as if the ‘E’ models are for Europe and the ‘U’ models for the USA. It isn’t clear if the ‘E’ models were also sold in the UK with some kind of 3 pin adapter. If you live in the UK and have one of these chargers please let us know in the comment box below.
