According to news from Channel Register, a number of users who have upgraded their laptop PCs to Windows 7 from Vista have complained that they have seen a radically shortened battery life when using their new operating system.
During Window’s 7 beta cycle last summer, a few users did report similar problems, however since the launch of the Microsoft new OS in October this has triggered even more cases.
The website reported that the issues seem to be coming from a set of drivers that are designed to notify the users when their battery requires a replacement. However, users have complained that this alert is a recurring issue, even when there is nothing wrong with the battery and can even cause the computer to shut down.
So what have Microsoft done to fix the problem? Well, it has been reported that Microsoft are looking into the problem and they are working hard to try and find the root cause of the problem and will update once this issue has been resolved.
The immensity of the problem is still unclear, however Microsoft’s TechNet forum, dedicated to Windows client issues revealed that they had over 100 posts during January and many received the error that said “consider replacing your battery”. However, with Microsoft announcing it has sold approximately 60 million Windows 7 licences (Q2 results), there could be yet more consumers who may be affected by this problem.

My battery was fine on MS Vista I was getting 2 hrs of battery usage. There seems to be alot of users who are experiencing similar problems. Micsrosoft Windows 7 User
I have upgraded my HP dv2000 as well and get the same problem as Britpak1. When I first installed win 7 I felt that I got an increased battery time. But the battery time I get now is about 30-45 minutes. I get a red cross on the battery symbol both on battery and when loading…
I hope they find the error soon. I feel that I need to replace the battery but I do not want to do it before this is fixed…
Hey, so I have a HP dv2000 upgraded to Win7 from Vista and about a week ago, I was using it on battery and suddenly my computer shut down. I thought this was pretty weird because i had put it into hibernate and fully charged it that night. So i restart my computer and check my battery % and see that its at around 50, wtf? The ‘consider replacing your battery’ error shows up and now i only get about 30 minutes of battery life…
I too hope MS fixes this problem quickly.
I have the same problem now

I’m real tired mind on that
Please help me
I’m not exceed two and the Year of the battery does not remain intact

I have the same problem, I am running a Toshiba Satellite P100 and have tried so many other methods of removing this blinking cursor.
I think this issue needs to be identified correctly and MS to sort out a patch quickly.

I have the same problem with my HP Pavillion dv2000 laptop. I was about to get a new battery until I started reading all the forums. Microsoft is making me more angry by the day. As I got rid of the junk Vista OS, and upgraded to Win 7, and now I get an issue like this. Apple is looking better by the day.
shooooooot and yes what the f*** !!!!
since puttin win7 on, I had the same and as my machine is over 12 monthe old I though I might just have runout of luck and just need a new batterie so I went and spend alot of cash on their new 12 cell batterie which should have given me a good 8 to 10 hours of internet or even more of ‘working’ on tjhe machine.
well, what shall I say?
my computer ‘hibernated’ after only 40 minutes! which isnt great for I thought MS would have at least a patch or idea or sumthing to help the problem but my guess is that if they dont until the summer then some of us ‘go’ for the mac book pro as its ‘longer lasting’ when it matters… lol
oh , I forgot to say… I have the hp dv2799 ea
I have the same problem with my LG R500.
I’ve bought a new battery and after a few hours it was already showing the same message as with the older battery.
I have the same problem with my hp dv 2000. I thought i was was having an increased battery life with win 7 but it is now saying consider replacing your battery. It was changed with a new one just 2 months before . I contacted HP they checked my battery and told it is working fine…
This might be a bug with windows 7……
Hi. So glad to hear that this problem is not just me and my laptop. I have an HP Pavillion dv6 and just lately I too have noticed a small red cross against the battery icon, with a little message ‘consider replacing the battery’. Tonight when I had it just running off the battery, it suddenly shut without any warning. Now it has the red cross and says it isn’t even charging. My laptop is still under warranty and I don’t know what to do – didn’t realise it was an associated problem with Windows 7. Let’s hope this gets resolved SOOOOOOON!
Yeah…
I have the Battery not charging problem since today in the morning…. its really weird… cause my laptop is only 6 months old so it has to be a software bug…. Windows really need to step it up… cause im really to buy a MAC if problems like the battery keep happening!!!!
I too have an HP DV6700 with this same issue.
I have the same problem. HP dv6000. i know for a fact the battery is fine because I had tested it in a friends laptop.
I have an Toshiba Satellite L40 18L, and few weeks after i installed windows 7 this error “Replace Battery” with a red cross apeared ! And know my battery works only 20min, and then computer hibernate !
i recently installed back again Windows Vista, but the problem continues … :S
i too have problem with my dell vostro 1510 since i had installed window 7. its showing message that consider changing your battery. please help me out…………
BULL…. months have passed and Windows still hasn’t fixed the Battery bug… MAN… they really need to step it up cause I’m ready to buy a MAC is this problem ain’t fixed soon!!!
Same issue with 2 laptops at home, a Dell Vostro 1510 and a HP Pavilion dv6275us, Both had vista and battery lasted hours. With upgrade to Win7 both got “Consider replacing your battery” message and battery doesn’t last longer than 20 mins.
I have tried everything with no luck. =/
hi all.. i am facing the same problem with my Compaq Presario CQ40 laptop. With Vista this issue did not occur. I have been facing this problem only since i upgraded to Windows 7.
I have updated all my laptop drivers, my windows version is legal and up to date.. so its definitely an issue with how Windows 7 is managing the power/battery.
While i like Windows 7 over its predecessors, I am really disappointed with microsofts inability to ship a product that doesnt contain some major bug or the other.
lets hope that they fix this problem soon.. doling out over 60million cheques aint gonna be easy if consumers win the class action suit.
Cheers.
i have a same problem in Windows 7 Ultimate ,my battery was healthy till i installed Win7,after that my battery has been damaged, and now in works just for 15min’s with an error saying “consider replacing your battery”.
and of course i think there is no way back cause battery has been damaged.
my Laptop: Dell vostro 1310
I too have this problem which started a few days ago.. strangely, my laptop was upgraded to windows 7 64bit 2 months ago and the problem has just started so maybe it’s something to do with a recent Windows update? Just a thought… Come on Microsoft…geta grip on this before you lose thousands of Windows 7 users..
Sorry..forgot to add the bettery is only 6 months old..My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5100.
Mines just started yesterday, HP was going to replace my battery but it seem like it’s pointless if this will happen again right. ARGH!!!! Macbook is calling me.
HP G60….
I also have this issue one minute my battery was lasting 1:30hrs the next minute I get the consider replacing notifcation and now it turns off about two mins after the thing has booted up my power lead is now in constantly!!
I have a acerbic aspire 6920g that is 1 year old
This may be nothing but I thought I’d pass it on.. I’ve read on various forums that turning off the battery control in device manager helps. I thought that maybe the battery was being stopped from charging properly by this control so did this. I turned it off in device manager under battery /ACPI battery control and allowed the laptop to run until it was completely flat and the pc wouldn’t boot at all with no life showing. I then charged it fully until the green light came on. Restarted the pc with the ACPI still off (obviously)and once fully booted went into device manager and turned it back on and no red x shows even after rebooting a few times. Battery life under balanced shows just over an hour but it’s a generic battery and maybe that explains it’s short life.(It was never very long when new under Vista). I’d be interested if this works for anyone alse.
3 year old Acer Aspire 5100 -Windows 7 64.
Update guys…pc rebooted a dozen times without the red x coming back but as soon as it ran down and the charger was connected…back it came….Wer’e on the right track …Oh well….back to the drawing board…
Apologies for a third post but I hadn’t actually pushed the charger into the socket tat the back of the pc fully so the red x was because the battery was dying.
It seems after testing for a day that this method has worked on my machine and the red x and warning is now gone.. It’s also removed it from my brothers laptop.
So please try the method in my post above. It’s inportant to first disable the ACPI battery control in device manager before completely and I mean completely flatten your battery.Once it won’t even light a bulb put it on charge until it shows full.Just make sure the ACPI is disabled while it is charging..Disconnect the charger and boot up.Once booted FULLY go into device manager and enable the ACPI battery control. I hope this works for you..
I have same problem with Acer Aspire 4535 + Windows 7 Home Premium…

my laptop is aspire 5735z and i m having the same problem.plz try to solve it as soon as possible
o mesmo ocorre comigo Dell Vostro 1510. W7 U.
well… don’t know if its just me or all the people had the same problem. The beginning of May 2010.. suddenly this red ‘X’ showed on my battery icon and saying “Consider replacing your battery” error… my laptop is not that old so its definitely not the battery here. As I search for answers out the internet.. No solution has been found. For some reason since yesterday July 1, 2010…. that red letter ‘X’ is gone! that error message is not there anymore. That is good news right? But… the bad news… my battery don’t last that long anymore. The use to be 2hrs long battery is now 30 minutes. Does anybody experience the same? Why did this happen? Anyone? Did Microsoft finally issue and fixed and removed that error which ruin my battery?
hi, since I install windows 7 ultimate in my laptop, I see a red X on battery icon and when pointer gone on icon I can see this ”consider replacing your battery”, if everyone know the solusion, please help me!
