On-Demand digital rental service LoveFilm has announced partnership with Studio Canal, formerly Optimum Releasing, in a deal which will boost the content of its movie and television catalogue – including adding a few classics to the arsenal.
It was speculated that LoveFilm had already sealed a deal with Optimum Releasing back in September, so a change of name makes no difference and the official word was given today. Recent titles from the now Studio Canal include East End invasion flick Attack the Block, produced by the creator of Shawn of the Dead and Source Code, the psychological time-traveler starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Film fans will also be able to explore the Studio Canal/Optimum back catalogue with classics like Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now – or perhaps even Flash Gordon appeals more to the sci-fi fanatic? It’ll probably be there for your viewing pleasure.
Boss of LoveFilm, Simon Calver speaks of his company’s growth into the digital content on-demand market: “We have been pioneers of DVD rental since we launched our rental-by-post service and are now leading the way in streaming content directly into the living room.”
At the beginning of the year LoveFilm claimed over a catalogue of over 67,000 movie titles and through a series of lucrative mergers it has become the most dominant distributor of DVD and digital rentals in the United Kingdom.
