Latest Bluetooth specification 4.0 announced

The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) the body who oversees the development of the Bluetooth standard, have announced the latest 4.0 specification of the popular wireless technology.

Bluetooth 4.0 the next step

Bluetooth Version 3.0 announced back in April 2009 seems like it was only announced yesterday – probably because the amount of devices currently using that version of Bluetooth are quite thin on the ground, in fact we can only thing of the Samsung Wave that features version 3.0 , yet the Bluetooth SIG are still pressing forward without looking back. The latest version mainly focuses on low power consumption, which will ensure users can get the most of out of their Bluetooth devices while using as little power as possible, in fact according to the Bluetooth SIG, version 4.0 has the ability to allow devices to potentially run for years on a standard coin-cell battery, which is certainly an impressive feat. Version 4.0 will obviously have the key features of previous versions of Bluetooth including high-speed data transfer, which is one of the key features of the 3.0 specification.

Now that the qualification program has been opened, it should mean that manufactures can now start to incorporate the new specification into their devices and get them qualified. Therefore, we may start to see Bluetooth 4.0 in devices by the end of Q4 2010.
