Intel Unveils Core M Processor

IFA 2014 has showcased some of the coolest new tech products this year, from the Motorola Moto 360 to the ASUS ZenWatch. Of course in amongst the hot topic wearables have been some other hidden gems, especially the new, and absolutely tiny, Core M processor from Intel.

Small, but decidedly mighty, the Core M is ready for action.

The processor, central processing unit or CPU, serves as the main brain of all electronic devices which serve as a computer, large or small. It handles the main decision making tasks of a smart device, with its power measured in gigahertz, or GHz. Intel are famed for their high quality cutting edge processors, and the Core M is no exception, especially since the device saves power by not requiring a fan.

Measuring up at just 14nm (those are nanometres by the way) the Core M is a great contender for ultra thin devices such as the upcoming 12in Apple Macbook Air, a device in which the processor is rumored to feature. Intel claims the Core M is the most energy efficient processor in the Core range, using so little power that eight hours of battery life shouldn’t be too difficult to get out of a full charge for devices using Core M.

Intel has been busy comparing the processor with laptops around 4 years old, claiming that the processor will allow double the battery life, twice the performance and seven times the graphics processing power of the average laptop of that age. Coupled with the tiny size of the processor, the Core M and future variants should be making their debut in a whole new generation of ultra slim, super powerful handheld and laptop devices, with the aforementioned Macbook Air possibly being the first.

But of course, Apple doesn’t hold any kind of monopoly of Intel products. Processors are for everyone, after all, it takes significant expertise and professional knowhow to create such complex components. Fortunately, Intel is very, very good at this. Around October Core M products should be on the market from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba. You should be seeing the Core M logo and sticker soon as well, similar to the one for Core i3, i5 and i7.

Some of the upcoming Core M devices

The Core M is expected to be a revolution in mobile device processors, upping the game of these small handheld and laptop computer which are at the top of the market today. Look out for the Core M this CHristmas if you’re considering a fast, lightweight modern tablet, netbook or 2-in-1 device.
