HTC Confirms it Will Make Next-Gen Windows Phones with Apollo Software

  • by

While HTC’s line of One Series Android handsets may be the talk of MWC, but that doesn’t mean they’re not innovating in other areas too. One of these is Windows Phone, where HTC has seen some success with its HTC Radar and HTC TITAN phones, despite losing their title as the biggest producer of Windows Phones in the latter quarter of 2011.

The company’s chief product officer, Kouji Kodera, spoke with Pocket-lint and MobileBurn and confirmed to them that HTC is developing a new range of Windows Phones to be launched in the last quarter of 2012. It’s not known whether these phones will share the One moniker (I’d guess not), as it’s all still up in the air.

The phones will run Windows 8 for mobile, codenamed Apollo, which includes many new features including support for multi-core processors, multiple screen resolutions, microSD card storage and NFC. The new mobile operating system will also tie in well with the desktop and tablet versions of Windows 8, with Skype integration and BitLocker encryption support.

HTC is also due to be coming out with the HTC TITAN II to AT&T in the U.S in March, and bringing the phone worldwide to other LTE-equipped countries (like Germany and Scandinavia) soon afterwards.

I’m really looking forward to Windows Phone Apollo; Windows Phone has too long been hamstrung by low resolution displays and single core processors, and with those restrictions removed we should be able to see dramatically more powerful – and unique – Windows Phones on the market.
