Chalk this one down to failed experiments gone very wrong, as less than a year after the initial testing and release of Google’s revolutionary (well it would have been if anyone used it) Email/messaging system Google Wave is reduced a mere ripple.
The Platform was certainly introduced with a fair amount of fanfare and was presented to the masses as the platform of the future for online messaging and email systems, but not long after the Beta testing for the product had finished and the official Wave was setup the system suddenly in a state of limbo.
The real issue is the target market of the platform, –it seems that no one really knew who it was aimed at, the Google Wave presentation conference showcased many of the great features that would be available in either the home or workplace but neither were expanded on or directly presented.
In a post on Google’s official blog, Senior VP of Operations Urs Hölzle has announced there are “[no] plans to continue developing Wave as standalone product.”
In the blog Google stated that Wave“has not seen the user adoption we would have liked,” and that the company will not be removing the service and will keep it live but will be dedication no more development towards wave. Google also stated “The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation we began. In addition, we will work on tools so that users easily “liberate” their content from Wave.”
So if Wave is on its way out then we can expect that the ins and out of the Wave system will be re-used again in some other Google product… possibly the Google Social Network that they seem to be working toward?
