Gaming weekly – Xbox Originals online support discontinued, Halo Reach media and the PS3 goes 3D

The end is apparently nigh for all you Xbox classic fans, as Microsoft sadly announces that the online support for their original Xbox console is on the way out. It was inevitable, as supporting older games has held back development of the Live service for about 4-5 years, meaning that many gamers are unable to expand their friends list beyond 100 other players… if you really play Xbox that much.

The players most affected by these changes are of course the Halo 2 online community, who of course, might not take this very well. No response from the community has been officially released, but it would probably read along the lines of: “Give us back our Live you ” or some other insensitive statement possibly relating to your mother… maybe ending the service wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

However, omnipotent Halo developers Bungie have graciously opened Halo 2’s doors to all who own a copy, announcing a climactic send-off for arguably the highest grossing Xbox classic game made. The send-off kicks off on April 14, as Bungie somewhat tearfully promises “One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2.”

Microsoft too has spoken; saying that this wasn’t an easy choice to make, but in the end, it was holding back development in the long run. So in short, this sad ending may yet yield a better service in the near future.

But, don’t fret, as in other news, some lovely new Halo: Reach media has recently popped up around the net, specifically on the Bungie site. Included are some high quality pictures of all new characters, weapons and locations, fully rendered as they will appear in the game and more tantalizingly Bungie have also announced that the Halo Reach Beta will also Go live on the 3rd of May. Look for those on Bungie.net.

Sony have announced that a new Firmware update will be available in the Summer for its Playstation 3 and PS3 Slim consoles, the new update will allow the Playstation to play 3D games and support 3D Blu-Ray. For more info click HERE.
