First BBX Smartphone Leaked, The Blackberry London

  • by

The BlackBerry that could turn around RIM’s business has just leaked.

The BlackBerry London will be Research in Motion’s first BBX-powered smartphone. This is a phone that is trying to combine the best of the BlackBerry OS with the best of the new QNX OS we have seen on the PlayBook tablet.

QNX has its flaws however, RIM has been unable to get BlackBerry’s main feature running on QNX (that being the BES email service) and they were also having issues with BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) with the PlayBook. However, looking at the screen shot it looks like that may have been resolved with the forthcoming BBX OS.

The device above takes after the recently released Blackberry Porsche handset and it is a looker. There are also some rumours that it is going to be thinner than the iPhone 4.  The London replaces the Blackberry Colt as the first BBX handset the company are set to release, the reasons why the Colt has been dropped are as yet unknown, but the rumoured specs of the BlackBerry London mean we are not going to miss much.

The BB London is set to have a TI OMAP dual-core CPU running at 1.5GHz, plus 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. You will also get an 8 and 2 megapixel camera on the front and back respectively.

The handset is set for a Q3 release in 2012, which is a little bit late for my liking, especially when Android handsets are almost definitely going to be rocking some quad-core chipsets by then.

Hopefully though, the late release date will allow RIM to iron out all the kinks, giving us a handset that will have a beautiful interior as well as exterior.

A lot of the success however is all down to whether RIM are able to get BES running on the device, as without it the handset will just not be able to compete with the multimedia devices that will be rocking our world at that moment in time.
