Will Apple’s Tablet Mean the Death of the Netbook

When Asus launched the Eee PC 700 and 701 in 2007 nobody knew what a netbook was. The PC industry had been moving ahead for years with only one aim, bigger and bigger, faster and faster. Then Asus realised that you don’t need a quad core processor with 8GB of memory to read your email. And so they launched the small 7 inch screen Eee PC range and started a revolution. But now the same “bigger and faster” disease has hit the netbook and new devices like the fabled Apple Tablet could take their place.

Apple Tablet Announcement Coming January 26th?

As you probably know Apple is very good at keeping its upcoming products a secret. In fact it is almost fanatical about it. The result is that the Apple rumour mongers are equally frenzied about discovering any new Apple product information. Accordingly it has been reported, by the FT, that Apple have booked the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco for several days in late January. The question is why?

Brits Text the Most in Europe – Also Have Most Digital TVs

According to Ofcom the UK sends the most text messages in Europe, in fact we Brits send the most text messages in the world except for the USA. Last year an estimated 83 billion text messages where sent in the UK. Also in the UK 88% of households have digital TV on their main set which is the highest in Europe.

Microsoft’s Bing App Debuts on iPhone

Microsoft has released Bing for the iPhone. Although Microsoft has a couple of apps for the iPhone, bringing Bing to the platform is a recognition of the iPhone’s popularity and market share. The app looks quite neat and as well as including voice search, image searching and news it also has location based services like movies, maps, businesses and directions.

Rumour Mill: Google Phone To Be Called Nexus One

Over the weekend there has been a frantic flurry of news stories, rumours and blog posts about the so-called Google Phone. Allegedly called the Nexus One, it is rumoured that Google will release their own unlocked (meaning it will work with any operator) mobile phone based on a heavily customised version of Android.

Vostro V13 – Dell’s New Ultra Low Voltage Business Laptop

This isn’t the first Dell laptop to use an Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor, but the new Vostro V13 is Dell’s first ULV laptop specifically designed for small and medium businesses. ULV processors offer better performance than the processors traditionally found in netbooks and are better suited to laptops. But because they use less power than traditional laptop processors, they generate less heat and the battery lasts longer.

New ‘Flipper’ Dual Format Blu-ray/DVD Discs Announced by Universal

Universal Studios has announced a new hybrid dual-format disc which contains both the Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film. On one side will be the Blu-ray film and on the other the DVD. The idea is that you can buy this disc now and watch it on your DVD player and when you eventually upgrade to Blu-ray (which face it, you will in the end) then you have the Blu-ray version too. The key here (according to Universal Studios at least) is convenience and viewing flexibility.

Twitter is Top Word of 2009

There are around 1.58 billion English speakers on this blue-green planet and the most used English word this year was Twitter. This is the first time when the name of a website has become the most used word and it beat other very popular words like Obama, H1N1 and Stimulus. The well used and often abused suffix, 2.0 and the word Hadron (the object of study of CERN’s new atom smasher) were also found in the top 10.
