Asus WAVI Xtion Controls Your PC Using Motion Gestures, Very Much Like Kinect

You may or may not know that it wasn’t just Microsoft behind their hugely popular Kinect accessory. A company called PrimeSense helped develop the sensing and recognition technologies, something Kinect relies upon to send data to the games you play.

PrimeSense have now teamed up with Asus to create a product that looks and sounds extremely similar to Kinect. It’s called the WAVI Xtion (catchy, no?) and it’s going to be unveiled at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) between January 6-9 in Las Vegas.

The difference between Kinect and the WAVI Xtion (there doesn’t seem to be many) is that it will be used for PC, aimed mainly at Media Centre PCs used in living room-type spaces. Asus are looking to make PC use in the living room easier, using motion sensing and gestures to control and navigate your PC. The idea is to be able to sit on your sofa and control photos, music, movies and games etc using motion or voice gestures, a concept very, very similar to Microsoft Kinect.

WAVI Xtion will connect to your PC using a wireless transmitter, and much like Kinect will sit either above or below your TV screen or monitor. Unfortunately we won’t know any further technical specs or details on how it works until it’s official unveiling at CES in 2 days time.

The Asus WAVI Xtion is scheduled to go on sale during Q2 this year, and will be released worldwide in stages.
