Apple Removes ‘Nearly’ All Sexually Explicit Content from iPhone Apps Store

5000 iPhone apps containing adult themed content have been banned from the Apple apps store.

This ban has followed recent customer complaints from women who found the content was getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see. One customer highlighted that parental controls failed to work as advertised and even though the Buy App/Get App was greyed out to ensure that that the app could not be purchase, they were still able to preview the app including the screen shots with detailed descriptions.

It has been reported that Apple have been getting in touch with developers who have produced apps with sexually explicit content, however a recent article in the New York Times suggest that Apple have only removed nearly all ‘sexy’ content from the site.

When we mean ‘nearly all’, Apple SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller explained why some applications like Sport Illustrated’s swimsuit app and Playboy will be allowed to remain on the store? Surely, exposed cleavage on Playboy is going to cause the same offence to women as any other app? Well, it would appear that Apple will have disagree on that part and commented that:

“The difference is this is a well-known company with previously published material available broadly in a well-accepted format,”

I am pretty sure that this will ruffle a few feathers with the apps developers, so let’s watch this space.

  1. Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
