Apple Launching Developer ID Certificate Scheme

According to reports, Apple have this week started to send out emails to developers informing them of a new ID scheme that the Cupertino company are about to introduce.

It will be known as Developer ID and has been introduced for developers of Mac OS who prefer not to sale their software via the Mac App store. By having the developer ID, it will show Apple users they should be able to trust the developer who has created the software they are possibly going to purchase.

Obviously the main aim of this new scheme is to prevent the development of malicious software, which Apple Mac users may inadvertently install on their system. Software created by an accredited developer will be digitally signed and along with Apple’s new Gatekeeper utility, it should ensure that users will not be conned into installing software that could damage their system.

In the email that has been sent to developers, Apple have said:

“The Mac App Store is the safest place for users to get software for their Mac, but we also want to protect users when they download applications from other places. Developer ID is a new way to help prevent users from installing malware on their Mac. Along with Gatekeeper, a new feature in Mountain Lion, signing applications with your Developer ID certificate provides users with the confidence that your application is not known malware and has not been tampered with.

Get your applications ready for Gatekeeper today. It’s easy to get started with Developer ID using the automated certificate request tools in Xcode 4.3 or the Developer Certificate Utility.”

It’s believed the new system will be rolled out soon, so if you’re an Apple developer make sure you check back with Apple to find out more information about how to enrol.
