Apple iPad: Who Will be the Official UK Carrier?

Since the launch of the Apple iPad a couple of days ago you would have thought the rumours might have stopped by now. However, with details now confirmed on specs and proposed shipping of the iPad in the US for March, the next question on our lips is when will this shiny new gizmo be released in the UK and who will be its network carrier?

Steve Jobs has already suggested that the UK should be seeing a release of the iPad in June/July time, however there is still speculation of who will be the UK carrier of the iPad. Our bets would be O2, especially as they were exclusive carriers for the iPhone until September last year, however recent rumours from SIM supplier, Gemlato suggest otherwise.

We all know from the specs that the Apple iPad won’t be using a standard SIM card but instead operates using a micro SIM. Gemalto have suggested that O2 as well Orange have both a large number of these micro SIMs. Now, I am not surprised by the news about O2 ordering these iPad compatible SIMs as it only seems natural that Apple may want to continue their relationship with O2 but what about the speculation that Orange is also purchasing these micro SIMs?

Maybe they have bought these batches to pitch and test their offering to Apple to win an exclusivity deal? Or are Apple simply opening the iPad out to a range of networks in the UK? It wouldn’t surprise me especially because if the Apple iPad arrives unlocked in the UK (which we already know it can be done), it may mean that a range of networks, not only Orange and O2 will be able to support customers who want to use the iPad on their network.

What do you think? Who do you think will win the war of the iPad carriers? Or do you think they will be opening the iPad up to a range of networks? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think?
